SUBMISSIONS

SUBMISSIONS

80 blank pages want your FANWORKS

PLEASE CHECK THIS POST FOR A RULES AND DEADLINE UPDATE

NUMBER OF SUBMISSIONS PER CONTRIBUTOR

For now, each individual contributor can submit two (2) different pieces of fanwork. You CAN submit more, but I might ask you to settle for two in order to give everyone who submits a fair chance to appear in the book.

Since space is limited, each contributor is given four (4) pages max. You can divide these between your submissions as you like, e.g submit one page of fanart, and three pages worth of fanfic, or two fanarts spread across two pages each.

An exception to the above rule is made if you contribute a doujinshi/comic with a cohesive story, which pushes your max number of pages to eight (8).

This is subject to change if we do not receive enough submissions to fill at least 78 pages.

CONTENT

Almost any sort of subject matter is allowed, and the themes are free for you to choose. Het, gen, slash, everything goes, as long as it is related to Metal Gear. Fanwork for non-canon Metal Gears, such as Ac!d or Revengeance, is also allowed.

Any rating is allowed. However, do not depict pedophilia, bestiality, extreme violence or full frontal genitalia (the last two only apply to artwork). Rule of thumb: Keep the smut classy/tasteful and make sure Saph doesn't have to go to jail. If you're unsure, ask.

We would strongly prefer if your fanwork has not been published in any communities, archives or galleries yet, to keep the content of the book fresh and new. Once the printed version of the book has sold out, we might put online a free digital copy and you can upload your fanwork wherever you like. Of course we can't exactly force you to stick to this because it is your work, but we'd like to keep things exciting for everyone.

ART

Single pieces of fanart can be one DIN A4 page, or be spread across two. They can be in color.

Format: 216x303mm (2551x3579 px) @ 300 dpi for one DIN A4 page to ensure high quality. CYMK or RGB color mode are fine. However, make sure that you don't place important elements at the edges of your image! Estimate about 3-5mm border where the paper will be cut off (trim area). If you do a 2-pages image, a total length of 416mm (4913 px) will apply, again with 3-5mm border (not in the center where the pages connect). Please save as high quality JPG!
[info]chewilicious and [info]ikipud were kind enough to create templates for both formats (keep the advice provided there in mind). Additionally, there should really be no important details at the very bottom of your image, even slightly above the red trim area, just in case we want to number the pages or add your name.

Doujinshi/comics can be a total of 8 pages, but must be strictly black and white, and the contributor won't be able to send in another submission in this case. If you stay within the 4 page limit, this does not apply.

Language used in comic/doujinshi must be English, and reading order must be left to right (western style).

Quality: While we don't expect everyone to be a master artist, we do want to see that you put some effort into your work. Five-minute-sketches will most likely not be accepted.

FICTION

The estimate of words per page is 650, which means that your story can have a max wordcount of 2,600 words. You can also submit two fics at 1,300 words each. While not a must, it would be absolutely lovely if you could consider these wordcount per page levels so your fics will fill whole pages, e.g. it should preferably have around 1,300 words instead of 900. This way, we can avoid blank spaces.

Must be written in English language.

Your fic should, preferably, be a one-shot and not part of a bigger story.

Quality: please make sure your fic is formatted properly, has correct grammar and preferably no typos. We'll probably still do minor edits to integrate fics as perfectly as possible into the fanbook, but we won't extensively beta your fic, nor is it our job to make it readable. [info]athenemiranda has volunteered to proofread submitted fics and eliminate leftover mistakes.

Please attach your fic as an .odt, .rtf or .doc file to the submission mail.

FILL OUT THIS FORM

AND SEND IT TO mgsfanbook2012@gmail.com TOGETHER WITH YOUR FANWORK. We will look over your submission and if it's acceptable, we'll send you a confirmation and you're an official contributor! If there's something wrong with your submission, we'll tell you and give you a chance to fix it.

TENTATIVE DEADLINE: MARCH 30TH

Both guidelines and deadline are subject to change, depending on submissions!

AND AGAIN IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, DON'T HESITATE TO ASK.

oh yeah I have a quick question
how do you check if your image is 300 dpi? I'm using SAI Painter and I see a little "resolution" at pixel/inch or pixel/cm, so I guess I just stick 300 in that for pixel/inch?

Sadly I'm not familiar with that program (I use Photoshop myself), but yes it should be 300 at pixel/inch (dpi meaning dots per inch, so pixel per inch).

Andy just go to Canvas --> Image Size --> Resolution and just put in 300, making sure the adjacent drop-down arrow is set to pixel/inch

I uploaded a jpg template for fanartists to use, for those unsure of how to make it the right size and resolution. The red area demonstrates the 5 mm trim area that important details should not be on. Make sure that guideline is NOT visible in your final art.

Click here for the template, it's big.

Make sure you save the template onto your computer instead of just copy+pasting it into your art program, so that it stays at the right resolution.

This is incredibly handy. I'll add it to the post!

Oooh this is very helpful. I went ahead and used it to make a template for a 2-page spread as well.

This is also awesome. However when you do a two page spread, you need to be careful about the center. 3mm are DEFINITELY going to be cut off; here the read area is 5mm (to be on the safe side and to avoid things like text being too close to the edge).

So I'd think it'd be best to draw into the red trim area in the center, from each side, but not draw through all the way, if that makes sense.

So I'm never really on here much and everything, but I have been hearing about this art book and I think I will try my best to contribute to it. I have an idea for a picture I'm planning to work on soon so I'll see if I can do it well enough for the art book! I think this is a wonderful idea though. Also, how much will the book cost? Or are you still very much unsure until you get closer to the deadline? Do you possibly have an estimate on the 78 page one?

Looking forward to your submission!

I can't tell you the final price yet, since it depends on the number of color art submissions as well as other factors like binding and paper quality and so on- I do have a few estimates though! A single copy shouldn't cost more than 15$ + shipping, but at that price, it would be REALLY good softcover quality. I could make it way cheaper, like maybe 8-10$, but then the quality won't be as good, of course. When I'm finished compiling the book and got final quotes, I'll make a poll asking if you guys want a cheaper or more pricey version.

Hi! I'd really like to contribute. I have a fic that I haven't posted anywhere that is about 1.5k, and while I probably can take out 200 words I'd rather not. I was wondering if it would be all right for me to submit a full page of (unrelated) art and a half-page illustration to go with the fic that could just be pasted in that last half page, so as to avoid blank space?

Also, said fic is NC-17 rated, although it isn't very explicit in language. However, the way I have it right now, it contains one use of the f-word. Is that all right or should I rephrase that sentence?

Thanks in advance!

Avi

Given the small illustration would be part of the fic and serve to avoid any huge blank spaces, this sounds fine! However, in order for me to be able to integrate it better when layouting, it might be better if you give the smaller illustration no background (leaving it white).

Oh also, use of the f-word is totally fine, so don't worry about that!

I shouldn't answer questions at 6 in the morning

Okay! Hooray!

I'm sure I can figure out a way to do it on a white background if that's what you want, but if I were to fade in white around the edges before I submitted would that be acceptable also?

Thanks so much for all the help :)

6 in the morning? Daaaang

Are there any examples of what kind of work was in the last fanbook?

You'll have to browse [info]mgs_fanbook. There were some preview photos, but the digital version of the fanbook isn't available anymore. Looking through my copy though, it's pretty much everything from simple pictures of characters over comicstrips to slash and genfic.

Alright, I have a super stupid, super late question. One of the templates on it's own fits the dimensions you gave above, but on a two page spread when I put two of the templates together they're bigger than the width you gave. Does the above width have the cut area taken out, or is something wrong possibly with the way I put it together?
You have 4913 and mine ended up 5102. Am I supposed to overlap the center boarders? or keep them touching? Or maybe something else is going wrong?

[info]saphrawn

April 29 2012, 07:36:38 UTC 4 weeks ago

Did you try using this 2spread template Pud created? It should have the right dimensions unless I overlooked something. XD

[info]almightyramtha

April 29 2012, 17:26:20 UTC 4 weeks ago

Oh haha, it looks like the 2 page is also 5102. Phew! I thought I was doing everything wrong and started to panic. Thanks for the help!
